The quality of the student-teacher relationship has a significant impact on a student’s school performance, in particular their sense of safety, well-being, engagement at school, and appreciation of school subjects. The effect of student-teacher relationship on school perseverance is even more marked in the case of students at risk of dropping out.

Courses of effective action

  • Make sure that teachers form supportive and positive relationships with students as soon as they enter school, especially in disadvantaged neighbourhoods, by making the entire staff aware of this reality.
  • Develop positive disciplinary models that maintain high expectations for all youth.
  •  Put activities in place that help increase the quality time that students, teachers, and school staff spend together.
  • Broaden the network of adults who are able to support and guide youth.
