RRM replies “Present!” to the MEQ’s catch-up plan

Following the Quebec government’s announcement of its school catch-up plan, Réseau réussite Montréal (RRM) has leapt into action to help make it a reality. 

The RRM and its partners are currently identifying priority actions to help the most at-risk students, to be implemented by Spring Break and over the course of the coming year.

“Most of the students impacted by this school stoppage were the same cohort who have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic since 2020, and we know that accumulating risk factors increases the risk of dropping out.”   

It will take efforts from all facets of society – from the education sector, naturally, but also from parents and employers – to get through this critical period. Let’s work together!

Back-to-class campaign 

RRM is also taking part in a province-wide micro-campaign, led by the Réseau québécois pour la réussite éducative, to raise awareness of how the school interruption has impacted some students’ motivation to graduate. The campaign reminds everyone that students belong in school and that we can all play a role to this end. 

 

Learning loss among at-risk students  

During lengthy school interruptions, most students (children, teens, and young adults) forget a portion of what they learned in school, especially in mathematics, reading, and writing. This loss of learning is normal and understood.  

However, this phenomenon does not affect all students equally. Upon returning to class, some will have forgotten more than others. Such students thus risk having fallen behind compared to their peers when they return to school.   

This regression can have repercussions on the rest of the school year, and even on their long-term educational journey.
