Children tend to conform to the characteristics they see around them and to adopt the behavioural models\u2014whether positive or negative\u2014of their immediate surroundings. Children and youth living in poorer neighbourhoods are more at risk of having trouble with the requirements of school, and dropouts are more likely to come from these neighbourhoods. Living in a neighbourhood with strong social cohesion has a positive effect on children\u2019s performance at school.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Courses of effective action<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Put in place activities that help to integrate families into neighbourhood life.<\/li>\n<li>Organize initiatives at schools or daycares in which families and community organizations take part.<\/li>\n<li>Organize activities to facilitate the various personal and educational transitions of youth in the neighbourhood.<\/li>\n<li>Put in place an outreach system to get in touch with families who are hard to reach or to identify new families.<\/li>\n<li>Put in place child stimulation activities for parents.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"notes-bpage\">Source: R\u00e9unir R\u00e9ussir<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>For more information<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reseaureussitemontreal.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/factsheet17_neighbourhood_residence.pdf\">Download the determinant\u2019s reference sheet<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Where students live has an effect on their development.
