{"id":10373,"date":"2020-05-29T12:36:52","date_gmt":"2020-05-29T16:36:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.reseaureussitemontreal.ca\/?page_id=10373"},"modified":"2020-07-08T15:46:34","modified_gmt":"2020-07-08T19:46:34","slug":"feelings-of-depression","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/www.reseaureussitemontreal.ca\/en\/key-topics\/covid-19-and-educational-success\/determinants-in-light-of-the-pandemic\/feelings-of-depression\/","title":{"rendered":"Feelings of depression"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Published May 29, 2020<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em>This article is part of our \u201cDeterminants and the pandemic\u201d series, which examines certain determinants of school perseverance in light of the current crisis and its attendant measures.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"#determinant1\">Determinant<\/a>\u00a0|\u00a0<a href=\"#impacts1\">Impacts of the health crisis<\/a>\u00a0|\u00a0<a href=\"#concerns1\">Concerns<\/a>\u00a0|\u00a0<a href=\"#solutions1\">Solutions\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<h6><strong><a id=\"determinant1\"><\/a>WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT DEPRESSION?<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>Some studies show that about <strong>16% <\/strong>of Qu\u00e9bec high school students present a significant number of symptoms of depression.<a name=\"_ftnref1\"><\/a><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Girls:\u00a0<strong>25%<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Boys:\u00a0<strong>10%<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Certain studies give significant weight to feelings of depression during schooling, since it would appear to be a similar predictor of dropping out as grades in French and mathematics.<a name=\"_ftnref2\"><\/a><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The link between dropping out and mental health is also highlighted by a recent U.S. study, which showed that <strong>half<\/strong> of dropouts have a mental health problem.<a name=\"_ftnref3\"><\/a><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Work by Qu\u00e9bec researchers V\u00e9ronique Dup\u00e9r\u00e9 and \u00c9ric Dion also shows that <strong>40%<\/strong> of dropouts experienced a stressful event in the three months prior to their dropping out.<a name=\"_ftnref4\"><\/a><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/p>\n[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reseaureussitemontreal.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/factsheet7_feelings_of_depression.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Learn more about feelings of depression<\/a>]\n<h6><strong><a id=\"impacts1\"><\/a>WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT THE POTENTIAL IMPACTS OF THE HEALTH CRISIS ON DEPRESSION AMONG YOUNG people?<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>We do not have specific data on this topic, but a number of studies conducted among workers or the general population appear to indicate that confinement situations have significant negative impacts in general.<\/p>\n<p>A Canadian study currently underway shows a high rate of anxiety among workers during the current lockdown situation.<sup>[4]<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>A London meta-analysis has also identified a number of negative effects of confinement, such as symptoms of post-traumatic stress, confusion, and anger. It also identified certain characteristics of confinement that can be major sources of stress, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Duration of confinement<\/li>\n<li>Fear of risk of infection inherent in the confinement<\/li>\n<li>Frustration<\/li>\n<li>Boredom<\/li>\n<li>Shortages of certain everyday consumer products<\/li>\n<li>Inadequate or incomplete information<\/li>\n<li>Loss of income<\/li>\n<li>Stigmatization (when the confinement is not generalized)<a name=\"_ftnref5\"><\/a> <sup>[5]<\/sup><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Other factors that can have lasting effects on young people include lack of face-to-face contact with classmates, friends, and teachers, and a lack of personal space at home.<a name=\"_ftnref6\"><\/a><sup>[<\/sup><sup>6]<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, certain studies identified in the above-mentioned meta-analysis point to significant psychological impacts among quarantined children compared to non-quarantined children.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #5dae46;\">\u201c\u2026mean post-traumatic stress scores were <strong>four times<\/strong> higher in children who had been quarantined than in those who were not quarantined. 28% (27 of 98) of parents quarantined in this study reported sufficient symptoms to warrant a diagnosis of a trauma-related mental health disorder, compared with <strong>6%<\/strong> (17 of 299) of parents who were not quarantined.\u201d<\/span><a name=\"_ftnref7\"><\/a> <sup>[<\/sup><sup>7]<\/sup> [Emphasis ours.]\n<h5><strong><a id=\"concerns1\"><\/a>why is the situation a cause for concern?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Given both these findings and the current situation, this determinant should be monitored for the following reasons:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The lockdown could increase the number of young people experiencing depression and accentuate symptoms among those who do, which could compromise several facets of their lives, including their schooling.<\/li>\n<li>Some studies indicate that the effects could last up to three years post-crisis.<sup>[7]<\/sup> If so, it will be important to consider the potential long-term needs of these young people.<\/li>\n<li>Since a link between depression and dropping out has already been demonstrated, the crisis could have an effect on the number of young people who drop out of school.<\/li>\n<li>Girls may be more at risk than boys. Given that <strong>25%<\/strong> of girls in Qu\u00e9bec high schools present symptoms of depression, it is reasonable to imagine that their situation may deteriorate.
